COLOUR CODE FOR LIVING SPACES
Colour is a sensation not a substance. “Colours are the children of light, and light is their mother. Light, that first phenomenon of the world, reveal to us the spirit and living soul of the world through colors.” Johannes Itten, Elements of color, 1970.
It is basically having the knowledge to mix and put colours together to create your artistic piece, it is one element in building, creating an artwork.
Various aspects and choice of colour
Hue is just one aspect of color, the other two are generally expressed as saturation and value. Hue is the more technical definition of our color perception which can be used to communicate color ideas. Hue ranges from 0° to 359° when measured in degrees.
Tones, Tints and Shades
Colour tone is a colour drawn from a palette of variations of the original color.
In color theory, a tint is a mixture of a color with white, which reduces darkness, while a shade is a mixture with black, which increases darkness.
Light colours make rooms look bigger whereas dark colours make rooms look smaller.
VIBGYOR and spectrum:
VIBGYOR is an acronym for V iolet, I ndigo, B lue, G reen, Y ellow, O range and R ed. These are the seven colors displayed in a rainbow and referred to as VIBGYOR. Colour visibility (spectrum) depends on their wavelengths. Using lighting/ electrical fixtures to enhance the impacts or effects of colours within the space.
Blacks, whites & Greys:
The black color is the absence of color. Black is a mysterious color that is typically associated with the unknown or the negative. The color black represents strength, seriousness, power, and authority. Black is a formal, elegant, and prestigious color.
White is a positive color associated with growth. It is calm and peaceful and meant to bring about a sense of security. White symbolizes purity.
There are many shades of grey and used in areas like borders, window liners etc. Grey symbolises both the properties of black and white. Use of these colours is selective and specific to the use. It is minimal in their true hue.
Orange, Reds, Browns and Maroons
Orange, Reds, Brown and Maroons promotes a sense of general wellness and emotional energy that should be shared, such as compassion, passion, earthy and warmth.
Pink, Blues and Purples
Blue is the color of the sky and sea. It is often associated with depth and stability. It symbolizes trust, loyalty, wisdom, confidence, intelligence, faith, truth, and heaven. Blue is considered beneficial to the mind and body.
Pink, a delicate color that means sweet, nice, playful, cute, charming, feminine, and tenderness. Purple combines the stability of the blue color and the energy of the red.
Yellows & Greens
The color yellow is vibrant in itself, as it represents the color of the sun. This is known to be full of energy. Yellow also means something bright and happy, and the usage of this color is known to bring about a proper clarity of thought in the mind of an individual, and also improve one’s decision-making skills. Wisdom is usually associated with this color. Green symbolizes renewal, fertility, freshness, spring and good fortune.
Rustic & Metallics:
A rustic design style is a design dominated by natural materials such as raw wood, stone, and metal. Metallics mainly include gold, silvers and bronze colour schemes.
Opaque and Translucent:
These are the coatings applied on base colours to enhance their properties and sustainability. Using monochrome colour schemes, highlighting one wall within the room, using stamps and motifs, patterns or textured wall paints, mosaics walls, writable colour walls, blackboard walls or magnetic walls etc.
The above mentioned are some trends in colour coding for rooms activity-wise and user-wise. Colours add life to spaces but knowing the qualities of colours add to the liveability of spaces. To conclude, Vaastu as per perception is the ‘Choice’ of color and the right color choice adds to the ‘Perspective’ towards the space.”
