Kabir Khan’s ’83, that stars Ranveer Singh (as Kapil Dev), to showcase India’s first ever cricket World Cup win will also feature Punjabi actor-singer Ammy Virk essaying the role of pace bowler Balwinder Singh Sandhu. The film is slated for an April 2020 release.
Virk will command audience attention in the climax of the film when, as Sandhu, he will bowl the last ball at West Indian Gordon Greenidge that castled the batsman, giving India the much hard won WC title.
Interestingly, while Sandhu will be played by Virk, the real life cricketer’s services are also being exploited to coach actor Ranveer Singh on the ‘swing’ aspects of bowling (of Captain Kapil Dev) as well to brush him up on the then Indian cricket team captain’s mannerisms and game plans. This will help Singh to get into the skin of Dev who led the Indian team to its first WC win. Singh recently shared a picture with Sandhu, his coach from a practice session. The film is to be shot in four months, between May and August.
One of the producers of the film ’83, Madhu Mantena said, “We are in the process of casting and will rope in actors from film industries across India to retain the true spirit of the film.”
There is palpable excitement among audiences over the movie being made on the cricketing moments that are forever etched into Indian cricket history. Earlier, the entire Indian cricket team that lifted the WC had participated in an event with the filmmakers after plans for the film were first announced.
Khan’s directorial project, ’83 will be shot at real locations and even as Ranveer Singh plays the lead, casting of the other cricket players is to be announced soon. Reliance Entertainment will release the and film that is produced by Mantena, Vishnu Induri and Kabir Khan.”
