The 8.44 crore voters electoral base in Maharashtra (including 4.43 crore men and 4.01 crore women voters) has swelled a further 0.35 crore (35 lakh voters) in the ongoing exercise of the Summary Revision of Electoral Rolls (SRER) that was launched on November 1, 2018. Mumbai city alone has witnessed over 2 lakh new voter registrations (form 6 filled up) belonging mostly, to the ‘Millenial’ generation (those born after 1984).

Two important revelations gleaned from the exercise of inducting new voters relate to the keen intent at enjoining the democratic electoral process by the majority of new voters belonging to the just-turned-major or newly 18 year-old segment of the population. Currently over 50 per cent of the Indian population is estimated to be below the age of 25 years of age.

Confirming the voter base  boost a senior secretariat official told Kiran Hegde Live (KHL), “The projected population of Maharashtra today stands at 12.6 crore people (factoring in the annual average increase since 2011 when the last census was conducted. We are pleasantly happy to note that there are over 35 lakh new voter applications being processed currently under the SRER exercise. A majority of these new voters are first timers who have just turned 18 years of age and applied for voting rights through form 6 that is available for the purpose. We expect these numbers to further swell by January 4, 2019, when the exercise of new voter registrations will come to a close.”

According to available date (as on November 1, 2018) More than the rural hinterlands of Maharashtra, urban centers like Mumbai, Thane, Navi Mumbai, Nashik, Aurangabad and other cities have evidenced the bulk of the new registrations. Mumbai (city segment) had 13, 49, 692 registered male voters, 11, 09, 410 female voters and 106 third gender voters as on  November 1, 2018. Similarly, Mumbai (suburban segment) had 37, 25, 323 male voters, 30, 92, 946 female voters and 456 voters belonging to the third gender.

The total number of voters in these two segments of Mumbai city pegged at 24,59, 208 voters (Mumbai city segment) and 68, 18, 725 voters (suburban region) with a total of 92,77,933 voters,  has now increased by 2 lakh new voters. Similar expectations are held for Thane city that had 32, 868 male, 26,67, 292 female and 331 third gender voters registered till November 1, 2018 totaling up to 58,88,491 voters.

The high density voter bases in Maharashtra also include Pune (71,89,265 voters), Nasik (42, 60, 393 voters),  Jalgaon (32, 93, 157 voters), Amaravati (23,34,854 voters), Nagpur (38,73,959 voters), Yavatmal (20,38,514 voters), Nanded (24, 06, 859 voters), Aurangabad (26, 49,641 voters), Ahmednagar (33,18, 555 voters), Solapur (32,26, 683 voters), Satara (23, 87,, 877 voters), Kolhapur (29,65, 314 voters), Raigad (21, 61, 614 voters) and Sangli (22, 33, 831 voters).”
