The five elements of nature ie: paancha mahabhutas include, Bhumi (Earth), Jala (Water), Agni (Fire), Pavan (Wind/Air) and Space or Akash (Void). Each element is attributed with some powers.

Characteristics of the elements of nature:

Earth (Bhumi):- The first element of pancha mahabhuta is “Earth” which is translated as Bhumi in Sanskrit. This element is perceived by five the human senses that are Hearing, Smell, Taste, Touch and Sight.

Water (Jala):- The second most important element is “water”, jala in Sanskrit. This element has no odor (smell) but can be heard, felt, seen and tasted.

Fire (Agni):- The next higher element in human body is “fire”, agni in Sanskrit. It can be heard, felt and seen.

Air (Pavan):- The fourth element of panchmahabhuta is “air”, pavan in Sanskrit. Air can be felt and heard only; one cannot see the air.

Sky (Aakash):- The fifth and last element of panchmahabhuta is “space” which is translated in Sanskrit at aakash. Space is the medium of sound but is inaccessible to all other senses.

Subtle Energies:

The universe is full of subtle energies like the north pole (magnetic) energy, electromagnetic energy, earth’s gravitational force and solar energy. These energies cannot be seen but only sensed. When a building is constructed, care should be taken to ensure, obstacle free flow of all energies. If energies are not permitted to flow properly through the building structure then the inmates experience problems and the structure fails to benefit from positive aspects of the energies.

Earth: The earth has been graded based on its colour, smell and taste. The earth element can be land, landed structures etc. It can also influence construction material and the way they are used so that it provides stability to the structure.

Wind power and Hydro energy is the use of air flow and water flow respectively through turbines to provide the mechanical power to turn electric generators and traditionally to do other work, like milling or pumping.

Solar energy is radiant light and heat from the Sun that is harnessed using a range of ever-evolving technologies such as solar heating, photovoltaics, solar thermal energy, solar architecture, and artificial photosynthesis.

Thermal energy is a part of the total energy of any object. Thermal energy is related to the temperature of an object. Thermal and internal energy is equal to the sum total kinetic energy possessed by the molecules whereas the heat energy is generated when during the transfer of thermal energy from high temperatures to low temperatures.

As per Fengshui the principle five elements are Fire, Water, Earth, Metal and Bamboo. Vaastu and Fengshui uses these elements to decode the existing energies in your house. Each element is associated with a specific shape, colour and energy. Whereas sustainable design principles include Energies (Wind, Hydro, Solar, Thermal, Kinetic energies etc). Climate responsive design of materials comprises yet another aspect of sustainable design studies. These elements of nature are an integral part of any house/building design either from Vaastu beliefs or climatology aspects.”
